Girl Crush: Marya Hornbacher

Marya Pictures, Images and Photos

Marya Hornbacher is one of my favorite authors: Wasted is one of the best memoirs about anorexia and bulimia you will ever find.
Marya Hornbacher published her first book, Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia in 1998, when she was twenty-three. What started as a crazy idea suggested by a writer friend became the classic book that has been published in sixteen languages, is taught in universities all over the world, and has, according to the thousands of letters Marya has received over the years, changed lives.

Her new book,Madness: A Bipolar Life,  is about her discovery of her Type I rapid-cycle bipolar disorder.

From Wiki:

Marya Justine Hornbacher (born 4 April 1974) is an American author and freelance journalist. Her book Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia, is an autobiographical account of her struggle with eating disorders, written when she was twenty-two. It has been translated into fourteen languages and sold over a million copies in the U.S. Wasted was banned in many public school systems due to its many drug and alcohol references as well as repeated sexual encounters. Her second book is the critically praised 2005 novel, The Center of Winter, which follows a family in the aftermath of a suicide. Her third book, published in April 2008, is a memoir called Madness: A Bipolar Life, written after she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Marya Hornbacher was born in Walnut Creek, California and raised in Edina, Minnesota. She is the only child of Jay and Judy Hornbacher, professional theatre actors and directors; her mother worked as a school administrator before converting to theatre. She became bulimic at age nine and developed drug and alcohol problems by age thirteen. When Hornbacher was fifteen years old, she was accepted into the prestigious arts boarding school Interlochen where she developed anorexia.
The summer following her first year at Interlochen she was hospitalized for her eating disorder and then moved in with her father's ex-wife in Northern California. While there, she met her future husband, Julian Daniel Beard, but her eating disorder steadily worsened and she was re-hospitalized after Christmas. She was released in February but readmitted again after only two weeks. Eventually her parents sent her to Lowe House, a residential treatment hospital for adolescents with severe, long-term mental problems.
After her release that summer, she enrolled in the University of Minnesota and started writing for the university's student newspaper The Minnesota Daily. At the age of eighteen, despite her continued eating disorder, she signed out of treatment. In the fall of 1992, she entered college at American University in Washington D.C. Her eating disorder rapidly worsened and by the winter she had dropped to fifty-two pounds. On a visit home to her parents, she was admitted to the ER and given one week to live.
Though Hornbacher survived her ordeal, she has been left with many physical ailments as a result, including osteoporosis, a heart murmur, and infertility. Her second autobiography, Madness, also describes a near fatal incident of cutting but Hornbacher herself seems unclear about whether or not this was an intentional attempt at suicide.

Girl Crush: SayanythingBr00ke

I found Brooke by way of XSparkage. She is in Massachusetts, not all that far from me, and she is at the top of my list of Youtube Gurus I would love to meet in person and hang out with for a bit, or longer, if I am lucky enough.

She is witty, funny, and does not hold back with expressing her opinion. Girl after my own heart!

Girl Crush: Xsparkage

Leesha, aka Xsparkage on Youtube is the first Guru I started paying attention to.  I never was one to really browse the different categories of channels, and one night I stumbled upon "howto and style", and Leesha was frequently at the top 20.

She is a girl who naturally only feels comfortable wearing dramatic, sometimes glow-in-the-dark makeup creations, and the "makeup geek" that lives within me loves her for that.  As much as I tend to lean more towards a "Bobbi Brown", bring out your natural beauty philosophy when it comes to cosmetics, I also firmly believe in just sitting down and playing with what you have, and in buying colors you would normally never wear and taking them home and plunging head-first into experimenting with what you think goes together and what does not.

She is always smiling and bubbly and seems like a genuinely happy person even when she seems annoyed about something (usually it's trolls leaving nasty comments on her videos).  She seems like the type of girl I would have been really good friends with in high school, even though she is younger than I am.  Some people find her perkiness annoying, I find it adorable.

Girl Crush Series: Emma Stone

Photobucket

If you haven't seen the film "Easy A" (a movie inspired by the book The Scarlet Letter), you are definitely missing out. Anyone who remembers Emma Stone in Superbad will fall in love with her in her breakout role as Olive, the once invisible high school student who decides to turn imaginary "tricks" (basically she pretends to solicit sexual favors for money and gift certificates), after she would up lying to her best friend (Aly Michalka) about loosing her virginity. She becomes so popular due to her sexy shenanigans, which causes her to become a leper among the "Cross Your Heart Club", a Christian group headed by Olive's arch nemesis Marianne (Amanda Bynes). All this transpires while Olive still has a big crush on the school mascot "Woodchuck" Todd (Penn Badgley). Olive digs herself into a deeper and deeper hole, all the while, hilarity ensues. They even have Malcolm McDowell as the principal! (WINNING!).

Girl Crush Series: Natalie Dormer

Natalie on IMDB

Natalie Dormer first caught my attention as Anne Boleyn in the Showtime series "The Tudors". I think she's naturally very sexy and seems to be very smart and witty.

Girl Crush Series: Take it all off

I will be the first to admit that I have always felt that a woman who chooses to shave her head or cut it really short has balls. There are some women who actually look better with really short hair, and others who don't need to rock it but do just because (me being one of them).

Here are my favorite "barely there" females:

1). Robin Tunney in "Empire Records"

2). Natalie Portman in "V for Vendetta"

3). Alyssa Milano in "Charmed"

Did I miss anybody?

Girl Crush: Kate Winslet

I am not sure exactly when I first saw Kate Winslet. I believe her role in "Sense and Sensibility" as Marianne Dashwood was the movie that introduced me to her. After that came Hamlet, Titanic (not really a big fan of that movie but I loved her in it), Quills, Iris, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Finding Neverland, to name a few.

I believe my favorite role she played is Juliete Hulme in "Heavenly Creatures". It was one of her first movies and it solidified her as a woman with "balls".

There are roles Kate has taken on that absolutely no one else would be perfect for. Each of her movies is like comparing the movie version of "The Wizard of Oz" with Shirley Temple instead of Judy Garland. No one can imagine "The Wizard of Oz" with Shirley Temple, that's how perfect Kate is placed in these movies.

"Heavenly Creatures" is actually based on a true story:

Girl Crush Series: Gina Davis

Gina Davis is in two of my favorite movies of all time: Beetlejuice and A League of Their Own. She's about six feet tall and pretty in a very unconventional way. It's safe to say that there really isn't many women out there who look like her.

Ever see her in "Earth Girls Are Easy"? I thought she looked really hot in that movie. (*Sidenote: this particular movie is one of Jim Carrey's first movies*) Thelma and Louise was pretty hot too, come to think of it.

She really looks great for a 54 year old!

Girl Crush Series: Shirley Manson

Shirley Manson on Facebook

How can you not have a crush on somebody like Shirley Manson?

Photobucket

I've been in love with the band Garbage for a long time now. They even did a song and music video for my favorite cartoon series of all time, "Daria".

Her voice and her wonderful red hair are what got me. "Queer" still gives me goose bumps.

Hey boy, take a look at me
Let me dirty up your mind
I'll strip away your hard veneer
And see what I can find

The queerest of the queer
The strangest of the strange
The coldest of the cool
The lamest of the lame
The numbest of the dumb
I hate to see you here
You choke behind a smile
A fake behind the fear
The queerest of the queer

This is what he pays me for
I'll show you how it's done
You learn to love the pain you feel
Like father, like son

The queerest of the queer
Hide inside your head
The blindest of the blind
The deadest of the dead
You're hungry 'cause you starve
While holding back the tears
Choking on your smile
A fake behind the fear
The queerest of the queer

I know what's good for you,
you can touch me if you want,
I know
you're dying to,
You can touch me if you want,
I know what's good for you,
You can
touch me if you want
But you can't stop

The queerest of the queer
The strangest of the strange
The coldest of the cool
The lamest of the lame
The numbest of the dumb
I hate to see you here
You choke behind a smile
A fake behind the fear
The queerest of the queer
The strangest of the strange
The coldest of the cool
You're nothing special here
A fake behind the fear
The queerest of the queer

I know what's good for you
I know you're dying to
I know what's good for you
I bet you're dying to
You can touch me if you want
You can touch me if you want
You can touch me
You can touch me
But you can't stop

Girl Crush Series: Edie Sedgwick

Many have heard of Andy Warhol. Not nearly as many remember Edie Sedgwick.

She is Kiera Sedgwick's cousin, and was at one point in the 60's was America's "It" girl. England had Twiggie, the US had Edie Sedgwick.

A powerful but gentle, beautiful presence that was snuffed out too soon by addiction.

She never knew how truly beautiful she really was. Shame she died at 28. I'm 28. I can sympathize with her. I've always been scared that if I didn't get my head together I wouldn't make it to 30 as well. I'm very close to 30, but I do not feel nearly as ethereal as Edie. I never had the conviction that I wouldn't make it past 30.

But I do understand the pain of having an addictive personality who is constantly told how pretty she is so she shouldn't have a care in the world, the poor little suburban girl....that's me...
