This is my status update on Facebook from one year ago:
"A crisis of faith can make you feel like the world is caving in around you. Thankfully I pray every day to myself."
I'd like for everyone to write about their own "crisis of faith" and how they dealt with it or are continuing to deal with it.
My status update basically meant that I was in a position in my life that was so chaotic that I was really questioning my faith. Looking back I still have those forms of stress, but they are not as bad as they were a year ago, and I am thankful. My life will always be turbulent, but it's my life, and I wouldn't change it for anything.

ReplyDeleteI identify as agnostic bordering on athiest, so my crisis of faith isn't a religious one, but of a more pragmatic one.
ReplyDeleteAt the age of 38, for the first time in my life I'm paying attention to politics and all that goes with it. As a child growing up, you don't really think to question if the grown-ups have your best interests in mind, you accept it as a matter of course....faith, if you will. As you grow up, if you don't choose to pay attention to what's going on in the world, that faith in The Powers That Be is still there. Sure, there might be some corruption but surely not all of them could be like that! So you go on your merry way, immersed in dating and partying and having a good time. Until the day when you find yourself, for no explicable reason, turning on the news *voluntarily* and actually paying attention to it. Then you find yourself visiting news sites online and reading op-ed blogs....and the more you read the more pissed off you get and you're horrified that such things go on amongst The Powers That Be. No way! We've all been hoodwinked!
Heh. Well, that's what's been going on with me, utter horror at the level of corruption and stupidity and incompetence among the group of people that are supposed to be looking out for us. I have lost faith in the system.

I can't say that I ever had a crisis of faith, but I did have a crisis of organized religion when my pastor put our church in debt to the tune of approx $16 million, then "retired". I lost all faith in the church, but my faith in God remains strong as ever, which is very strong.
